Paros ,Greece as it should be

I don't know about you, but when I go on holiday I want something different.  I don't want to see the same shops and coffee bars that line every high street at home.  I want exotic, different, and foreign.  On that count, Paros won me over straight away.

There are two main towns here ' Parikia and Naoussa.  Parikia is the main port and commercial centre for the island.  Despite that, it is full of charm and character. Its main street, Market Street, is about a kilometre long but is only about two metres wide.  Three people walking slowly along, side by side, browsing as they go, completely block the traffic.  This is no place for speed.  Everyone takes their time and enjoys life.  The winding street is lined with shops and cafés and is always busy.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Parikia is that, despite the crowds, there are ancient ruins all around.  Walk around the back of the main supermarket and you will find an excavated pottery factory.  Just 250 metres from the docks is the major Orthodox Church on the island, Ekatontapyliani.  Often is called the 'Church of 100 Doors' this is the oldest Byzantine church in Greece and stands atop even older ruins.  It has viewing portals in the floor to allow you to see parts of the ancient temple beneath.

Naoussa has a very different feel and many of Paros' hotels are located here.  Originally a beautiful fishing harbour, Naoussa has expanded and become an up-market tourist destination.  Packed with small restaurants, bars and clubs, Naoussa has great nightlife.  It has traditional white-washed houses, a Venetian castle and fantastic sea views.  The bay is lovely for swimming and the nearby beaches, particularly Santa Maria, are stunning.

It is often said that Paros has all the beauty of any other Greek island without being over-run by tourists.  Fancy something a bit different? Come to this island. Paros hotels, villas and apartments are easy to find and the atmosphere and sights will stay with you forever.
